The University of the Philippines Geology Alumni Association (“UPGAA”), in partnership with Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia, held its 7th annual Baguio City Geotour on 22 November 2019 in conjunction with the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association’s 66th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC).
Through the efforts of Mr. Joey Nelson R. Ayson, Philippine Mining and Exploration Association President and UPGAA Chairman, a group of professionals and students attending the ANMSEC toured the Balatoc Mines of Benguet Corporation in Itogon, Benguet [located approximately forty (40) minutes outside Baguio City]. The participants were given a lecture on the different stages of mining and a tour of the mine led by experienced engineers. Participants also visited the mine’s museum which exhibits old mining tools, vintage machinery and rock ore taken from the mines.
According to Ms. Patricia Louise Yambao, one of the UPGAA members who led the geotour, “geotourism” means a fusion of geo (earth) and tourism. The goal of geotourism is to promote tourism that enhances the geographical character of a place, its environment, culture and heritage. Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia looks forward to continuing to support the UPGAA’s efforts in promoting geotourism.
