CMT Leads Labor and Data Privacy Panel at the Legal 500 GC Summit Philippines 2026

Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia (CMT) led critical discussions on the intersection of labor and data privacy at the Legal 500 GC Summit Philippines 2026 held in Manila, reinforcing its position at the forefront of legal advisory on emerging workplace issues. The session convened seasoned practitioners and in-house counsel to examine how businesses navigate the delicate balance between operational efficiency, technological innovation, and employee rights in an era defined by hybrid work and artificial intelligence (AI).

CMT’s industry leadership was on full display, with Partner Ramon Manolo A. Alcasabas providing authoritative insights on data privacy, and Partner Jerome D. Canlas expertly guiding the panel as moderator. They were joined by Francis Euston R. Acero, Vice President and Data Privacy Officer at Meralco and Joan Therese C. Medalla, Privacy Counsel and Data Protection Officer at Grab Philippines, who shared their insights on the challenges and remedies at the intersection of workforce management and data governance. Mr. Alcasabas’ and Mr. Canlas’ participation in the panel underscored CMT’s role as a preeminent advisor on the evolving challenges of digital transformation and AI-driven workplaces.

A central theme of the discussion was employee monitoring in hybrid and remote work environments. Mr. Alcasabas, whose practice spans data privacy, telecommunications, and regulatory compliance, emphasized that monitoring is a legal and strategic issue. He provided insights on the importance of transparency, proportionality, and lawful purpose, as recognized by the National Privacy Commission (NPC), and advocated for clear policies that define what data is collected, how it is used, and the limits of employer oversight.

Mr. Alcasabas highlighted the practical concept of a “data perimeter”—that while company-issued devices may be monitored for work purposes, tools must be calibrated to specific roles and productivity metrics to protect employee rights and maintain trust.

CMT’s session also explored off-duty employee conduct, particularly on social media. The panel addressed how companies must establish clear, well-communicated policies that specify violations and ensure consistent, defensible enforcement. Mr. Canlas, a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/E) with extensive experience in labor law, telecommunications, and privacy compliance, guided the conversation to focus on actionable strategies that in-house counsel may implement while balancing employee rights with business interests.

The panel further provided forward-looking insights on the adoption of AI in the workplace. While AI-specific legislation has yet to be enacted in the Philippines, Mr. Alcasabas noted that existing data privacy regulations continue to apply. He stressed the need for internal safeguards such as redaction protocols, AI governance policies, and employee training to prevent unauthorized disclosure of personal data. The firm also cautioned that AI outputs, while often persuasive, must support—not replace—human decision-making, particularly in hiring, performance evaluation, and predictive analytics.

Mr. Canlas’s moderation of CMT’s segment ensured the discussion remained practical and solution-oriented, translating complex regulatory and technological developments into clear guidance for businesses. His expertise bridged the gap between legal compliance and operational implementation, affirming CMT’s commitment to pragmatic and proactive advice.

The Legal 500 Summit highlighted a clear trend: labor and data privacy are now inevitably intertwined, requiring integrated legal solutions. By pioneering discussions on monitoring, off-duty conduct, and AI, CMT once again demonstrated its leadership in guiding organizations through the complexities of the modern, technology-driven workplace.
