Pancho G. Umali, Eric T. Dykimching and Aldwill T. Go of the Corporate & Special Projects and Mining & Natural Resources/Energy Departments of Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia attended Legal 500’s 2017 Shanghai Summit on 12 September 2017 entitled “One Belt One Road” (OBOR).
The summit was held at the Grand Kempinski Hotel in Shanghai, China, and was attended by business leaders, investors, and legal experts. Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia was the Philippine partner-sponsor of The Legal 500 for the event.
Over the course of 3 panel sessions, experts discussed the political, economic and legal aspects of OBOR and advised the audience on how to mitigate risks and unlock opportunities.
Pancho G. Umali participated as one of the legal experts in the first panel session entitled “The Maritime Silk Road and the Role of Legal Counsel in China-ASEAN Trade”. He explained the regulatory, political and financial climate in the Philippines in terms of foreign investments.
The second panel session was entitled “The Cyber Silk Road: How Legal Counsel are helping Tech-Backed Ventures to Thrive”. In the said panel session, legal experts and business leaders assessed a number of critical issues on intellectual property, data security and asset valuation in relation to the rise of China’s tech-driven investments.
The last panel session was entitled “China on the World Stage: The Role of General Counsel in Overseas Investments”. In this panel session, in-house counsels of several Chinese companies discussed the issues surrounding the new guidelines/policies issued by China which restricts outbound investments and tightened controls on overseas activities.
